How can good thinking improve sleep?

The research team made a significant discovery in the use of a popular cognitive meditation program to improve the sleep of adults with sleep disorders.

The results were published in the January issue of PLOS ONE.

The Sleep disorders in adults

Sleep is essential for homeostasis and maintaining normal cognitive and metabolic functions. Sleep disorders are more common in adults and can be caused by a variety of environmental, psychological and living conditions.

A study examining the prevalence of sleep disorders in adults found that 60% of American adults experience some form of sleep disorder, such as excessive sleep, wakefulness and anxiety.

Sleep disorders have short-term and long-term effects. Previous studies have shown that these abnormalities can lead to prolonged activity of the sympathetic nervous system and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis.

The sympathetic nervous system and the HPA axis function release adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH – cortisol-stimulating hormone) and cortisol, both of which are usually release during stress. Prolong activity due to sleep disturbances leads to maximum release of these hormones, resulting in short and long term effects associated with chronic stress.

Circadian rhythms are also impair due to slep disturbances.

The circadian rhythm is responsible for regulating our slep cycle and is drive by physical and behavioral rhythms. Circadian rhythm also regulates metabolic activity by sending signals for physical activity and food intake and regulating our heart rate and body temperature.

All of these processes are regulate by neurons in the hypothalamus. In sleeep disorders, these neurons become damaged and / or lost, and these operations are no longer regulated. Therefore, circadian rhythm can no longer regulate the cycle of food, physical activity, and sleeep. It has short and long term consequences.

Short-term effects of sleeep disorders include primary effects, fatigue, and secondary consequences: daytime sleepiness and wakefulness. Waking up before sleep occurs in two forms: conscious excitement (such as complex thoughts) and somatic excitement (such as headaches). The long-term effects of sleepy disorders are more serious, such as obesity, heart disease, anxiety and depression.

Current slep therapies for sleeping disorders are robust, mostly intolerant, and often associated with side effects. Treatment for severe sleeping disorders (e.g., insomnia) often involves cognitive therapy (CBT). TMB is also dense, low resistance and expensive, so it is not widely available.

Smart mediation is a more powerful form of intervention that has been find to be effective in treating sleepy disorders in previous studies. Not only sound education but his alertness and dedication too are most required.

The purpose of the study

This study was conduct to determine the effect of an intermediate mobile program on affecting fatigue, daytime sleepiness and wakefulness, which are primary and secondary consequences of sleepy disorders. Sleepy data were collect from saleep-deprived adults and from sleep-deprived adults.

Silent program

It is often thought of by adults as have mental health problems such as peace of mind, anxiety and depression. The talent available in calm is base on meditation, fatigue-base stress reduction and sleeep stories, intuitive immersion, and current awareness.

Numerous studies have shown that relaxation significantly improves mental illness, such as adult anxiety. There are currently several studies examining the effects of sedatives on sleeep disorders in adults.

In the study, researchers found that adults with sleeep disorders had significantly lower levels of fatigue than those with control. In adults with sleeep disorders, after an eight-week study, daytime sleep and pre-sleep alertness were lower than in control.

These results suggest that the process of thinking about rest to reduce the effects of sleeep disorders such as fatigue, daytime sleepiness and sleep in adults is relaxing.

What is the future of intelligent thinking and sleep?

This study was the first to examine a mobile meditation program for its effects on sleeep disorders under randomized control. Therefore, these findings are a step towards future research into the use of meditation methods as an alternative treatment for sleeep disorders.
